Infrastructure Engineering

Berkshire / Slough / London (Hybrid)
Full Time
£45,000 – £70,000 (DOE)
Job Description

This role is centred on building and operating resilient cloud infrastructure that underpins mission-critical services. The focus is long-term reliability, automation, and sound engineering judgement. This is not a role for quick fixes, reactive firefighting, or tooling for demonstration. It is about designing systems that hold up under real operating conditions.

You will work on the design, deployment, and operation of highly available cloud platforms, ensuring performance, security, and reliability are maintained as systems scale. The remit spans infrastructure-as-code, automation, monitoring, security controls, and incident response, with an emphasis on calm, methodical problem-solving when things do not go to plan.

Collaboration is a core part of the role. You will work closely with software development teams to ensure infrastructure supports application needs without becoming a bottleneck. This requires the ability to think in systems, understand trade-offs, and make decisions that balance speed, risk, and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain highly available cloud infrastructure
  • Implement and manage infrastructure-as-code using modern tooling
  • Develop automation to reduce manual intervention and operational risk
  • Own monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices
  • Contribute to security design and operational controls
  • Support production systems with a calm, structured approach to fault resolution
  • Work with development teams to enable reliable deployment and operation of services
Experience Required
  • Strong experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation (PowerShell and/or Python)
  • Practical experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Solid understanding of networking, availability, and security fundamentals
  • Familiarity with operational best practices and reliability engineering principles
Person Profile
  • A strong technical foundation is essential
  • A 2:1 degree or above in Computer Science or a STEM discipline is preferred, or demonstrable equivalent capability through experience
  • Comfortable taking responsibility for systems that matte
  • Able to make sound decisions under pressure without over-engineering or panic

This is a role for engineers who value stability over spectacle, clarity over noise, and who take pride in building platforms that remain dependable when the stakes are high.
